kira: a final farewell
February 17, 2025: We decided to say goodbye to our beloved Kira. It was a difficult yet necessary act of responsibility and reciprocal love. Kira offered unconditional love, a quality that canines embody so well, and we were obligated to give her the dignity she deserved.
I had known this day would come, but I struggled immensely with the decision. Although Kira suffered from arthritis and had difficulty moving, she still seemed very present. She continued to eat and interact with us, but it was clear she was in pain, and her mobility was worsening.
When we brought her to the vet, we were uncertain about what lay ahead. The veterinarian was incredibly kind and, upon assessment, revealed signs of more serious issues, likely anemia, and probable tumors in her abdomen. The prognosis was grim, and we knew this day would arrive sooner rather than later.
We had fourteen and a half wonderful years with Kira. She was a pure delight even at the end. She never complained, and I believe she would have continued without protest even as her days grew increasingly challenging—labs don't quit.
Kira was a cherished companion to me and my family. She was always by my side, especially in the kitchen, and she yearned for my company whenever I briefly stepped away—whether during a walk or in a doctor's office. She would look for me as if to say, "Please don't leave without me."
Kira was goodness and beauty wrapped up in a wonderful dog. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed, but she rests peacefully now and will forever remain in our memories.
